South African policies

Sir,—Thanks for the correspondent who quoted the figures for blacks and whites. This was true in 1947-48 when I was working there as a skilled tradesman in Johannesburg. I had a black man who worked with me. He had worked with the same firm for 17 years (dirty work naturally). I had a high wage; his was £2 10s. He received an increase of lOd for a 40-hour week. He was a good worker, and honest. I still write to friends in South Africa and the same difference is ever quoted. To compare our near neighbours is so wrong, for apartheid is a sad thing. — Yours, etc., K. T. CHILDS. May 6, 1981.
