University wins relay

The University of Canterbury Club won the Lovelock relay at Dunedin in the week-end, making it four years in a row for the side. Run at the University Oval, the team of six runners ran the 1500 m laps in a combined time of 24min 58sec, only 11 seconds ahead of the second team, Leith, from Dunedin. The win was an excellent performance, considering Grant McEwen ran the opening lap for University with

an injured arm, placing the team eighth. Gerry Merchant moved the team up to third. Richard Sprott (sixth fastest time — 4min 7sec) to first equal, and Dave Burridge placing the team in front with the fastest lap of 4 minutes flat. Burridge gave the University team a 13 second lead, and Brian Kennelly extended this time to 24 seconds, Murray Grant ran the second fastest time of 4min 3sec for Leith on the last lap.
