TWO PLAYERS, Grant Turner (Gisborne City) and Brian McKeown (Hanimex-North Shore), share the lead in the individual goalscoring tables in the Rothmans Soccer League. Both have eight goals, Turner’s from seven games, one less than McKeown. Mike Groom (Mount Wellington) has seven from 10 games, while three players, Kevin Weymouth (North Shore), his brother, Barry (Takapuna City), and Mark Armstrong (Manurewa), have scored four times each. MARK LIDDICOAT, the former Horowhenua first ’ fiveeighths who is playing for University A in the Christchurch senior rugby competition this season, is the early leader among individual points scorers. In four appearances he has gained 52 points, from two tries, seven conversions, seven penalty goals and three dropped goals. After Liddicoat comes Dave Bowick (New Brighton), 44 — 14 penalty goals and one conversion — David Farrant (Burnside) and John Holmes (Lincoln College), both 38, and Robert Lodge (Shirley), 34. Lincoln College’s Mark Mclntosh is clearly the leading try scorer, with seven. THE EAST CHRISTCHURCH-SHIRLEY Cricket Club celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary last summer and its history over that period has been documented in a wellillustrated, informative publication by Ray Cairns, a member of “The Press” sports staff. Mr Cairns, himself a member of the club for 20 years, spent many hours researching the minute books and capturing the low and high points of the club in his aptly-named book “Tales From The East.” In the middle years of the club’s history, the minute books were sketchy, in some instances non-existent, and Mr Cairns has been able to record the history as accurately and entertainingly as possible by quizzing prominent past members. The book provides a valuable recollection of events over 75 years and will be a decided asset should a similar venture be undertaken for the club’s centennial. THE REFEREE for the main senior rugby match at Lancaster Park this- afternoon, between University A and Lincoln College, will be Mr Colin Waldron, who is No 1 in Queensland and rated among the top three referees in Australia. He is in Christchurch with a young and promising Brisbane referee, Mr Greg Howard, as part of an exchange scheme; Mr Howard will control a senior B game at Middleton Park today. Under a Hertz sponsorship Canterbury will send three referees to Australia — two to Brisbane and one to Canberra. IT IS, perhaps, surprising enough in itself that outdoor bowls should still be being played so late in the season, but there were at least two club tournaments last week-end. The mild autumn has, no doubt, encouraged some clubs to remain open a little longer than they might otherwise have. However, the point of this storv is that in the course of a tournament at Belfast last Saturday a jack was split in two when it was driven on to another bowl. One piece came to rest in the ditch, still in the rink, and the other flew out of bounds. The umpire’s decision was that as the half in the ditch was “the bigger half” then it remained the jack. As a result the end was completed and a point earned. Inquiries later revealed that as soon as the jack broke the end should have been declared dead and replayed with a new jack. SOME 300 schoolboys, from both town and country, will participate in the annual Cantabrians rugby coaching clinic at Rugby Park next week. The three-day programme begins on Monday, with 12 and 13-year-olds in the morning and 14 and 15-year-olds in the afternoon. In all, the Cantabrians club has enlisted the assistance of 30 coaches, including a number of past and present All Blacks and Canterbury representatives. The course director this year is Dick Hockley. ■SATURDAY gg RUGBY KOI C.S.B. Cup, all games start 2.45 p.m. unless otherwise stated: Lincoln College v. University A. ■ Lancaster Park Oval; Marist v.
