Choice for the school holidays

Although, at first glance, this school holiday period does not seem to provide as many innocent diversions as usual, the films that are offered are sufficiently diverse and interesting to keep the kids out of mischief for some of the time.

Without picking out any favourites, it is interesting to note that the Masters Theatres are continuing their policy of showing first-rate children’s entertainment around the suburbs in alternate weeks.

For the first week (May 9 to 14), “C.H.0.M.P.5.” will be screened at the Roxy and Avenue at 10.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 2.30. p.m. daily;

“Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown” at the Academy, Hollywood and Northside at the same times; and “The Black Stallion” at the Stagedoor at 2 p.m. daily. During the second week (May 15 to 23) “C.H.0.M.P.5.”

moves to the Hollywood and Northside; “Charlie Brown” to the Academy. Roxy and Avenue; while “The Black Stallion” remains at the Stagedoor. at the same time. In the city, “Flash Gordon” (Cinerama) probably will provide the best entertainment for children of all ages. Whereas the “Star Wars” series seems to be taking itself too seriously now, “Gordon” chooses to forget about technical expertise and concentrate on fun and nonsense. Disney’s version of Kipling's “Jungle Book” returns after about ten years, with Mowgli and his animal friends (Flunky, King Louie,

Shere Khan, Bagheera, : Baloo, Colonel Hathi and his J son, and the wolf family).The music may sound a little bit dated, but I still like Louis Prima as King of the Apes. The third episode of the adventures of the “Mountain Family Robinson” will be , shown at the Odeon. This bunch of loveable adults, kids and animals has the right formula for children’s holiday entertainment and should be a winner again. The Avon is saying goodbye to “Pork Pie” after 13 weeks to put on another car chase movie. “Used Cars” seems to promise enough ’ action to even put “The Dukes of Hazzard” to shame. <
