30M watch debate
NZPA-Reuter Paris President Valery Giscard d’Estairig of France and his Socialist rival, Francois Mitterrand, vying for votes in the French presidential election on Sunday, fought a lowkey two-hour television debate yesterday covering unemployment, Communist Ministers, and foreign affairs. More than 30M French viewers are estimated to have watched the CentreRight President and his vet-
eran Socialist challenger state their claims for governing France for the next seven years. • Both candidates .avoided any heated exchanges anch' concentrated on elaborating established campaign themes in the debate, which commentators had regarded as crucial in what opinion polls show to be a close race. . Mr Giscard, aged 55, pressed the Socialist to declare whether he would include Communists,; whose
votes are vital to his election, in his Cabinet. - But Mr Mitterrand, aged . 64, sidestepped the issue, as he has throughout the campaign, saying he would dissolve the National Assembly and seek to rule with whatever majority emerged. The possibility of a Socialist victory on Sunday has caused a minor run on the franc which yesterday fell to its lowest level against the West German mark in two v years.
