Young Bay side in firm control

PA Nelson After its heroic slaying of the titleholder, Auckland, in the morning round of the Russell Grace tournament, Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley went on to beat Wellington, 3-2,. at Nelson yesterday. ; \ .This gave the young 8.0.P.-T.V. side its fourth win from as many matches and if it maintains form, looks likely to win the 1981 tournament. However, if Southland wins both its games today it will also be in contention.

Canterbury started the day with an easy 4-1 victory over Waikato. Adrienne Bond was unbeaten in winning her match, 3 and 2, and Jeanette Ross was two-under the card in winning, 4 and 3. Sue Bishop defied some briliant putting by her opposite No. 1,

Joanne Coffey, to win, 3 and 1. • But the. afternoon round, was a sad one for Canter--bury and’it lost; 1-4, to a confident Southland, team. Mrs Bishop started well against New -Zealand’s', top ■ player, Liz Douglas, and was 1 lip after nine holes. However, she lost the tenth to a birdie, lost the eleventh when she three-putted .and then both 13 and 14 ...when she missed the greens in regulation figures. Mrs Douglas played steady golf, and finished. onwiver the card. . Mrs Bond started sensationally in her match against another New Zealand representative, Jan Scandrett, holing her 9-iron for an eagle 3 on the first hole, but Miss Scandrett replied with a near hole-in-one on the pa.r-3 third

hole and from that point on . bad putting and mishit approaches cost Mrs Bond dearly. She was 4 down at the.’tenth and a birdie at 14 was not enough to. save, the situation. . 'I ; ’ • Mrs Ross seemed < in command against, the former . New Zealand representative, ,■ Robyn Boniface, . and was - , one-over and 2 up at the ?; turn. But she lost 15 to a birdie, 16 when she three putted and 18 when bunkered to lose 1 down. Nan Mann, whose form has J. been a little .mystifying, was 3 down after eight holes and eventually lost, 2 and 1, in spite of back-to-back birdies on9and 10. - , . The newcomer of; .-the, team, Chris Skinner, had her; second win of the day at No. 5 and justified her inclusion.
