Goal seals women’s lead
The senior women’s hockey competition has a solo leader at last. It is Burnside. The win, on Saturday that put Burnside on top did not come without a struggle. A strong, determined Harewood team applied enough pressure to keep the outcome against Burnside in doubt until the closing minutes. A superb goal by Burnside’s Judy Phillips gave her team a 2-1 win. Of the four matches oh the bumpy, hard grounds at Hospital Corner, two ended in draws. Selwyn-Hillmorton, after taking an early lead, finished 1-all with Woolston. University and Syden-ham-Cashmere were tied with two goals each at the final whistle. In the fourth game, Carlton beat Linwood United, 2-0. Results and scorers were:—
Burnside 2 (J. Phillips 2), Harewood 1 (Robyn Jenkins). Woolston 1 (D. Hockley), SelwynHillmorton 1 (J. Miller). University 2 (L. Surgenor. G. McKenzie), Sydenham-Cashmere 2 (R. Hunt, P. Gibson). Carlton 2 (M. Shand, J. Searle), Linwood United 0. Burnside v. Harewood.c Burnside extended its string of wins to four and is now, the only undefeated team in the championship. Hard, fast, aggressive play characterised both teams during the first-half. Although Burnside scored first with a goal by Judy Phillips, Harewood equalised with a penalty stroke by Robyn Jenkins about 10 minutes later.
Both sets of forwards combined well and both teams marked closely. The second-half began in much the same way, even Harewood’s defence was playing tightly around its goal and left little room for its opponent. Burnside, kept Harewood's defence busy because it was on attack much of the time.
Judy Phillips’ strong shot from the edge of the circle ended the stalemate. It was Phillips’, eighth goal of the season and she is the leading scorer in the championship.
Woolston v. Selwyn-Hillmorton
The draw, although not blemishing Woolston’s unbeaten record, has put the club a point behind Burnside.
Despite an aggressive start, Woolston was forced on to defence by a determined Selwyn team. The first-half was even with both sides having their share of chances. Selwyn’s June Miller scored the half’s only goal soon before the intermission. Her goal came after a penalty-corner. Selwyn came out for the secondhalf even more confident and aggressive. The team had quite a few opportunities to score, but was unable to capitalise on them. Shortly after the teams changed, Woolston received a penalty-stroke when a Selwyn player fell on the ball. Debbie Hockley pushed the ball into the goal to score. University v. Sydenham
For University, the draw was its second for the season. For Sydenham, the draw was its first point this season.
The game, like the score, was reasonably even from start to finish. University worked as a unit slightly better than its opposition, but Sydenham kept plugging away and looking for opportunities.
Although University had a slight edge, its forwards did not combine well , enough to turn its advantage into goals. Lois Surgenor scored first for University.. Sydenham’s Robyn Hunt evened the score when she scrambled after a deflected ball. Priscilla Gibson, a former New Zealand representative, opened the scoring in the second-half for Sydenham with a penalty-stroke. Grania McKenzie scored for University after a corner. Carlton v. Linwood United
After a 3-1 defeat to Woolston last week, Carlton got into the winning groove again. Linwood remains one of three teams in the championship without a victory. Carlton, had to wait until the second-half to score its two goals. Linwood, defending most of the time, set a slow cadence for the game. Both teams initially had trouble passing and finding players upfield. Carlton’s offence was more cohesive in the second half. The left inner Mary Shand and right wing Jill Searle scored goals.
