Kevin Townley to race team in California
By
G. K. YULE
The prominent Willowby reinsman, Kevin Townley, is completing arrangements to campaign another team in California, hour of his team win fly out from Auckland next Monday in the care of Tom Henderson.
Townley himself will leave New Zealand in about three weeks and certainly before the end of May, he said. Unless there is a change of plan, Townley will remain in the United States for about five months, returning to Willowby just before the running of the New Zealand Cup in November. Able Gold, Fallimento, Looking Glass and Kokonui will leave from Auckland on Monday, and it is possible they will be joined later in the month by one or two other New Zealand horses. They will join up with Flora Dor, which raced with success in the interests of Townley and Wayne Ross
when they took her, Adios Lobell and Lennox Bromac to California last year. “Flora Dor should be ready- to resume racing soon after I get over the.n. She’s been spelling since she had three wins and two seconds from five starts earli-r in the year,” said Towm-y. Flora Dor has won some §30,000 for him and Ross, the result of six wins, four seconds, a fourth and a sixth from 12 starts, said Townley. “The only time she failed to earn a stake — they pay five prizes in each race in America — was when she lined up against a pretty good field of geldings and
stallions. She came her last half in 56.45, but could manage only sixth,” he said.
All of her other racing was against mares and fillies. Her best time in North America is Imin 57.85, a figrue Townley expects her to improve on this summer. Adios Lobell has also won some §30,000 in stakes. She more than paid her way for her Christchurch owners, Messrs David Cooper and Jack Henderson, who subsequently sold her. _ Lennon Bromac, which was sold before he race I in America, is only a three-year-old in New Zealand. Already he has taken a record
of 2min 0.4 s on a half-mile track. Messrs Henderson and Cooper have replaced Adios Lobell by the purchase of Looking Glass, a winner for Mrs Fay McCarthy, who trained her and held her on lease. The four-year-old daughter of Jersey Hanover is expected to be suited by mile racing in America. Able Gold will continue to race in the interests of his former trainer, Doody Townley, and Messrs Jock Goddard and Ken Andrews of Timaru. He has come through his recent racing in grand style and is showing no signs of the problems which interrupted what appeared to be a most promising career. Fallimento and Kokonui will continue to race in the interests of New Zealand owners. , x Fallimento, a much-trav-elled seven-year-old, has not won a race this season, but Kokonui had three successes and was highly regarded.
