Labour policy
Sir,—Labour opened its election campaign in Lyttelton onApril 21 with a rewarding attendance. The younger voter seemed conspicuous by absence, yet this group under Labour will benefit tremendously in the area of employment particularly. Labour promised to abolish the dole, guaranteeing work, or training for the first five years of a school-leaver’s life, and an updating of an apprenticeship system. National policy is “think big” fostering highly capital-intensive multi-nation-als, scratching the surface of unemployment and using taxpayers’ money as subsidies. Labour policy on the other hand, is to resuscitate the works and development programmes — housing, irrigation, forestry, reading, hydro development, railway improvements, etc, all labour intensive. The spin-off into private enterprise, manufacturing, trades, small businesses, will have a snowballing effect and economic stimulation. Labour's first priority is full employment with economic stability. This will provide gainful employment and opportunity for advancement for young people.—Yours, etc., B. C. WHITE. April 24, 1981.
