Trotter keeps on winning
Special correspondent Dunedin Sir Castleton covered himself with glory when he won the Dunedin Trotting Cup on Saturday evening in his first start under invitation conditions. Sir Castleton led all the way and he had to resist a challenge for the lead in the early stages and some formidable bids from his rivals in the run home. “It was his hardest race to date,” said Pat O’Reilly, Junior, the regular driver of the four-year-old. Sir Castleton, which has had eight wins and a second from 10 starts, all during the last four months, will now head to Auckland for the Rowe Cup meeting which opens on Saturday week. Sir Castleton kept out Maudey at the 1700 m and he lasted gamely to win by half a lepgth from_ Kabase, which had trailed him throughout, with a similar margin to No Response, which staged a big run from the back. Scotch Tar broke badly in the early stages. He caught the main bunch at the 1000 m but was stopping under a hard drive at the 500 m and finished last.
“He has been having me on,’’ said “Slim" Dykman, his trainer-driver.
