Auckland rates cut back
PA Auckland The Mayor of Auckland (Mr Colin Kay) managed to get agreement to cutting $327,000 off this year’s council estimates but it was far short of the $1.5 million he had sought for his rates freeze policy. The council’s resources and organisation committee agreed to Mr Kay’s request that the council look at ways of saving $300,000 from the total estimates by greater efficiency, but it rejected almost all his proposals to prune more than $500,000 of urgent work this year. Mr Kay also lost attempts to close the council’s valuation department, to give up some reserves and the Waikumete Cemetery, and to introduce an entry charge to the art gallery. He won support for the investigation of a casino to provide revenue for local bodies on the isthmus and the use of consultants to study aspects of the council’s work.
