June census action

No legal action will be taken until June against persons refusing to fill in their census forms.

The Statistics Department area officer, Mr B. M. Thorne, said that before the department considered prosecuting persons unwilling to fill in their questionnaires, a reminder letter and a final reminder would be sent out.

"All facts surrounding each case will have to be decided before any action is taken,” Mr Thorne said.

A marked improvement had been seen in the filling out of the questionnaires, said Mr Thorne. The main area of concern was in the income sector. Many forms had had- to be sent back for further information, but generally the standards of returns was higher than in 1976.

The first figures from the census were released from Wellington last week, but these are only provisional.

Christchurch, for the first time, is processing returns for all New Zealand.
