Runners battle elements
■ Forty-two runners battled against a 20-knot northerly .wind and heavy rain in the annual Mount Cook mini marathon on Saturday. The winner, for the third time in a row, was Allan Sinclair, of Timaru, in 17min 28.1 sec, which fell short of his 1980 record of 15min 43sec, but compared favourably with his previous best time. Geoff. Anderson (Timaru)
was second in 17:58.6, and Angus Dellow (Timaru) was third in 18:26. The skm uphill event from the turnoff to the Mount Cook Airfield to the finishing tape at park headquarters was slightly longer than in previous years — “with a few more hills thrown in.” The first local man home was Tim Cyr, who is assistant manager at The Hermitage, with H. A. Youngman,
chief ranger at Park Headquarters in second place, and Shaun Norman third in this category. Louise Dellow (Timaru) was the first woman home, and the distinction of being first local woman to complete the race went to Sue McGregor. L. James,. Robin Parish, and Shirley Parish respectively captured the children’s platings.
