Hadlee, Howarth on coaching venture
PA Wellington The top cricketers, Richard Hadlee and Geoff •Howarth, will embark on a journey round New Zealand next summer , coaching mainly first-class batsmen and searching for budding fast bowlers, if present plans eventuate. The pair are expected to soon sign contracts which will guarantee they are in their home country for the 1981-82 season. The chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr Bob Vance, said that Hadlee and Howarth had agreed to
terms offered by the council’s board of control. “Before . they returned to England they indicated they would be happy to play here next summer,” said . Mr Vance. “At present the contracts are being prepared. They will be sent to Howarth and Hadlee for final approval and signing.” Starting in early November,- Hadlee and Howarth will tour the six first-class associations, coaching firstclass and other players, who will be picked out by the national selectors. Howarth will provide
specialised coaching in batting while Hadlee’s main job will be to search for budding fast bowlers. It is envisaged that there will be no more than eight in each area squad for either batting or fast bowling. After a week in each area the pair will then be available for the Shell series, and the test series at home against Australia. The New Zealand Sports Foundation has given §20,000 to help pay the pair next summer. The council is believed to have arranged further financial help but Mr Vance would not comment.
