Trade with Chile
Sir,—l see that Chile is still willing to trade with New Zealand in spite of the black ban from the-F.O.L. (“The Press,” April 13). It is interesting to note that the ban has not damaged Chile’s economy. It has merely blacked out one lucrative area of trade to us, which is only damaging our own economy. Chile is an ideal market for us, for the things
we produce best, e.g. meat, wool, wood products. Why don’t we re-establish links with Chile? We can only benefit. The F.O.L. tells us that the Chilean Government is undesirable, and then forces us to sever trade relations. But still we trade with Russia in spite of further communist intrusion into the free world. We could easily reroute our trade from Russia to Chile, and enlarge it into the bargain. This would show the world that we at least do not support the atrocities of the communists—Yours, etc., JAMIE FRANCIS. April 13, 1981.
