Art contest for arthritis sufferers
PA-. ■ Wellington An Auckland grandmother, so badly crippled with rheumatoid arthritis that she canmot hold a paint brush for long periods, has won the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation’s national art contest. Mrs Wiebigjc Haayema’s entry entitled ‘Our’ Back Yard” was selected by the judges from the 230 entries received from all over. New Zealand as the winner of the first-Arthritis Foundation art
contest, which has opened in Wellington. Mrs Haayema, aged 59,' who has -suffered from arthritis for 15 years, was encouraged by her doctor to produce a painting for the contest because he believed the exercise and the mental ’ relaxation would be good for her. She submitted four entries, all notable for their use of bright colours and imaginative approach. Her win gives Mrs Haayema a holiday at Treasure Island, Fiji.
