Egg sales dropping
PA - ‘ Auckland Poultry, •fah.mqrs are cdhcerned that egg’ sales have dropped by 20,000 dozen in the last year, largely because of rising prices. Eggs went up by 3c. a dozen on Saturday and this fifth price rise for 1981 was not expected to be the last for the year. The Poultry Board’s chairman, Mr A. Harvey, said the increases were caused by the rapidly rising cost of grain. The board was concerned
about the rises, but farmers had to make a living.Grain constituted 60. per Sent of farmers’ costs — “If j you could feed birds with | sawdust it would be fine, but I you can’t.” [ Mr Harvey said egg prices were dictated by how much I it cost to; produce one dozen eggs, and the board looked very carefully at costing each year. He predicted that broiler meat prices .could also be affected by the rise in grain prices.
