Mehta leads rally
NZPA-Reuter Nairobi The Uganda-born Shekhar Mehta, driving a Datsun Violet GT, grabbed the lead in the Safari Motor Rally yesterday when the West German Opel Ascona 400 of Sweden’s Anders Kullang hit a cow after the half-way stage. Mehta, seeking his fourth victory in the event, led the Datsun bid for a clean sweep of the top four places, which the Japanese manufacturer’s team occupied at the end of the second leg late last night. The third and final 1600kilometre leg starts today with only 28 of the 70 starters still competing. Kullang’s encounter with
the errant cow on the southeast Kenya second leg. seriously damaged the front end of his ear, causing overheating. He had ted from the first West Kenya leg of the 5000 kilometre event. The Swede dropped to fifth Biace. Three other works •atsuns were ahead of him - the Violet GT of the “Flying Finn,” Rauno Aaltonen, on a penalty of 146 points, the Slid of Finland’s Timo Salonen, on 154, and the Violet I6OJ of Kenya’s Mike Kirkland, on 202. One of the second leg casualties was the four-wheel-drive Japanese works Subaru of Japan’s Tateuhira Saito, which rolled before Nairobi and had to retire.
