Post Office closing

Sir,—l must complain, bitterly about the closing of the Walker Street Post Office, at the end of this month. After many years of satisfactory service to a multitude of businesses, people will have to go to Hereford Street to do business at a ’ time when many businesses have half an hour for lunch. As this is impossible the alternative will be to transfer funds to the trading banks. No doubt the powers in Wellington have, been drawing circles instead of looking at shoe leather and petrol saving at a time when the Post Office is-making scores of millions of dollars.—Yours, etc., W. FOOT. April 7, 1981. [The Chief Postmaster, Mr D. Page, replies: “It is appreciated that the closing of any Post Office will cause some inconvenience to those in close proximity. However, it would be quite uneconomic to retain the Walker Street office in addition to the new office in the Postal Centre, and it is hoped that the improved facilities for the handling of bulk mail and the fact that the new office will be able to offer full “on-line” savings bank facilities, will result in a better over-all service to a greater number of customers. While we regret any problem which the necessity to dose Walker Street may cause, it would be impossible for us to please everyone and it: is felt that, with the facilities provided at the Postal Centre and at the High Street Post Office, a reasonable service is being offered having regard to the costs involved.”]
