PA Wellington A Polish seaman who deserted his ship at Tauranga on April 3 has been granted political asylum in New Zealand, an officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed. The man, whose name and age have not been disclosed, failed to rejoin his ship, the Major Sucharski, before she left for Singapore. He made his way to Wellington and applied to the Immigration authorities for permission to remain in New Zealand. The application was considered by the special committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose recommendation was approved by the Minister (Mr Taiboys).
