Congressional visit

A congressional delegation led by the Speaker of the United States House of Re« presentatives, Mr T. P. O’Neill will arrive in Christchurch from Australia at the weekend.

The group of 15 will look at New Zealand’s economy, energy programme, agricultural industry, defence, and role in the South Pacific.

The delegation will meet the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys), who visited Washington recently and the Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, Sir Richard Harrison. Mr O’Neill said that the four-day visit would underscore the importance which

the United States attached to its relations with New Zealand and would demonstrate support for the role New Zealand played in the South Pacific and East Asia.

Discussions during the visit will also include matters such as access to the Indian Ocean, developments in Indo-China, and relations with the Soviet Union.
