Nathan denial

PA Auckland The Nathan group director of corporate services (Mr J. G..S. Reid) denied that members of the Shop Employers’ Association had been forced out of jobs by the merging of McKenzies and Woolworths. Only 35 people had opted to become redundant out of the McKenzies staff of about 900 at the time of the merger and these had made the decision despite being offered alternative employment, he said.Mr Reid said that. the closing of the eight stores

which had taken place so far had been in line with submissions made to the Commerce Commission. An exception had been the McKenzies store in Queen Street, Auckland, but this had been turned into a shopping mall which was providing far more jobs for shop workers. He said that through expansion and the opening of new outlets the company had created about 130 new jobs for shop workers since the merger had taken place.
