New design for anchor
Many different types of anchors ■have been developed over the years but. until now, there has not been a new design of anchor introduced for more than 100 years. The new design " anchor, developed by Shetland-born Mr Richard Hoseasbn Smith, is claimed as one which Will eventually take over .from the traditional anchors. Called, appropriately, the Hoscason Smith Hook, the anchor design won a place in a recent “Enterprise Scotland'’ competition organised by the Scottish Council. Mr Hos’eason Smith has patented his design which is claimed to be the first fully fabricated general purpose anchor developed. A prototype of the anchor has been built at Norscott Oil Services, the Lerwick-based subsidiary of Fred Olsen, Ltd, and will soon be undergoing trials for registration by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.
