Maternity benefit up for G.P.s

PA Wellington A 17 per cent increase in maternity benefits, payable from July 1, has been announced by the Minister of Health (Mr Gair). ■ He said the benefit was paid to general practitioners in full setlement of their services. “By law, general practitioners may not charge the patient an additional fee. Specialist obstetricians also receive the maternity bene-

fit but have the right to charge an additional fee to their patients,” Mr Gair said. “The increase will compensate doctors for the increase in basic costs since the last benefit adjustment in July last year. It will also assist in maintaining a continued high standard of maternity care in New Zealand,” he said. The additional cost of the increase for a full year would amount to an estimated $1.75 million.
