Nelson beer ready in August

PA Nelson The first batch of Nelsonbrewed beer will be ready for sampling in. August, according to the new owner of the Rochdale cider factory, Mr T. M. McCashin. Mr McCashin has been given approval by the Nelson City Council’s town-planning committee to establish a small brewing house to make the beer in the Stoke premises. He intends continuing existing cider production. The brewing work will involve about 12 peopleThe maximum quantity of beer produced ..,would be 10,000 gallons a week. Thequantity from the factory woiud depend on the access gained- to liquor outlets, Mr McCashin said.

The beer was originally intended for local consumption, but a brewer was coming from England with a recipe that was popular in Australia and Mr McCashin said he would be looking at an export market. Mr McCashin said that he had so far not tried to organise outlets for his beer in Nelson. “I can hardly expect people to agree to sell it until they know what it is like,” he said. “I am confident of being able to sell the beer elsewhere in New Zealand.” . • Mr McCashin, who owns a hotel .at Pictbn and another at Blenheim, said he had outlets in Marlborough but he preferred not to specify what they were.
