Three sides in line for S.I. polo title
Ashburton has won the Gould Cup 10 times in its 18 years, but it will nc-ed to produce a top performance if it is to retain the symbol of South Island polo supremacy when the championships begin at Ryans Road today. Last year. Ashburton fought back magnificently to turn a 1-4 deficit against Amuri A into a 7-4 victory. Three of those four Ashburton players will again be turning out — Michael Askin,
John Askin and Dennis O’Sullivan will be joined by Robbie Meyer, formerly with Waimate. Only two teams are sufficiently strong to hold realistic prospects of wresting the Gould Cup away from Ashburton. Amuri A, like Ashburton, is an eight-goal handicap team, and will be led by Alan Calder, an experienced campaigner, and the sole survivor from Amuri's last Cup win. in 1979.
