Car-park space
Sir, — I refer to your 480word report (March 12) on the Sydenham car-park saga. Is it City Council policy to extend
sport’s club pavilions to include dance floors and social rooms? Are these to be allowed without car-parking facilities? Should not the sports club provide the car parking? Organisations owning their own land are refused planning permission without providing car parking. Sports clubs on reserve land pay $lOO per annum rent. Some have 21 year leases. Societies owning their own land are paying rates far in excess of this figure — and their rates are increasing each year. These policies are encouraging the concreting-over of our open spaces, including 284 car-park spaces, costing ratepayers $lOO,OOO at Cuthberts Green. Soon there will be no open space left. — Yours, etc. RAY SPRING. President, Christchurch Area Council N.Z. Temperance Alliance. March 17, 1981.
