Big band jazz show

By

NEVIN TOPP

The Rodger Fox Big Band have been around concentric jazz circles in New Zealand since 1974, but it is believed that their Christchurch show on Sunday will be their first visit to Christchurch — within memory anyway. The high point of the band’s career to date was the appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland last year, but even before that the group was recognised for its style.

Among the. people that the Rodger Fox Big Bandd have supported are Woody Herman, Bruce Johnstone, and Bobby Shew, the latter accompanying the band on this tour of New Zealand. The orchestra consists of 21 musicians: five trumpets (doubling flugelhornO, four trombones, and five saxophones, and a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, andd a vocalist. The Rodger Fox Big Band drew warm praise from the critics at the Montreux festival; the leader and trombonist, Rodger Fox, was compared with the playing styles of J. J. Johnson and Frank Rosolino by one Critic. One of the reasons for the success of the New Zealand group has been its healthy disregard for musical barriers; it happily tackles all styles of music from blues to rock, or basic jazz. The proof of the Rodger Fox Big Band can be heard this Sunday evening at the Theatre Royal.
