Gang member guilty
After deliberating for more than five hours, a; .jury in the High Court last evening found a member of the Black Power gang guilty on three charges arising from a gang confrontation in Cathedral Square during the Arts Festival last year, Wally Awetere, aged 23, a labourer, was remanded in custody by Mr Justice Cook to April 15 for sentence on charges of taking part in a riot, wounding Peter Thomas Winikere with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and wounding Johnnie Pai Tahonga Moeau with intent to injure. All the offences were
committed on March 11, 1980, when members of the Black Power gang attacked members of the Mpngrel Mob during a lunch-time concert in the Square because of some slight to two: women associates of the Black Power gang. Part of the incident was filmed by a free-lance cameraman. The Crown- said that spectators were sickened and horrified’ by the attack which was carried out with a variety of weapons at a signal by the gang leader.
