Great Hall to close

The Great Hall at the' Arts Centre will close next week for four months while earthquake strengthening work is carried out. The full extent of the work needed is not yet known as some exploratory Work has to be carried out. The general manager of the centre, Mr Brett Riley, said yesterday that the entire structure supporting the stained glass window would have to be strengthened with iron reinforcing. The work would be done with the least possible visible alterations. Strengthening work on the clock tower will be stopped while it is two-thirds complete, allowing work to be done in the hall while it has not been booked. Mr Riley said that groups usually using the hall will be relocated either in the Arts Centre or. at the Peterborough Centre until work is finished The cost of the strengthening work will not be known until workmen assess how much work needs to be done.
