Big blow for Todd

NZPA London Mark Todd, of New Zealand, last year’s Badminton horse trials winner, suffered a big blow yesterday when he had to withdraw Southern Comfort HI ■ from this year’s trials which begin tomorrow. The horse, on which the 25-year-old New Zealander won the Whitbread Trophy last year, has colic — a very bad chill in the stomach — and was withdrawn ■yesterday afternoon. Todd, however, will ride his second horse, Jocasta, in

the trials. He rode the 10-year-old Jocasta in the Olympic substitute three-day event at Fontainebleau, in France, last August, but came to grief in the crosscountry. Todd, the first overseas rider to win at Badminton for 15 years, will be defending his title against a record field of one hundred entries, with riders from nine countries. Another. New Zealander, Ross Renwick, formerly of Auckland,' is also riding in the trials.
