Loffhagen to tour

The Country captain of last season, Ross Loffhagen, has replaced the University A loose forward, Dale Atkins, in the Canterbury rugby team to play three matches in Australia later this month. Atkins was forced out of the tour on Tuesday night when he was given a threeweek suspension by the Canterbury Rugby Union after being ordered off last Saturday for kicking an opponent. Loffhagen has captained Canterbury Colts as well as the Country team, but he has yet to play for Canterbury A. Along with his fellow Country flanker, Don Hayes, Loffhagen will remain in Australia after the Canterbury tour and join up with the Country team which follows on with a sixmatch tour. •- Hayes has been confirmed

as Canterbury’s touring captain, but so far no Country appointment has been made. The intriguing situation prevailed last year of Hayes being the Canterbury captain, but playing under Loffhagen for Country. The Country coach, Alex Wyllie, said yesterday that both Loffhagen and Hayes would be away for Country’s game against Otago Subunions at Rangiora on Easter Saturday so someone else would have to be the captain that day. It was probable, said Mr Wyllie, that the pair would also miss Country’s first game in Australia. “In the meantime we are hanging fire on the captaincy question,” he said. Meanwhile, Messrs Tom George and Fergus C. Campbell have, in the capacity of guest selectors, named a Cantabrians team to meet Canterbury in a warm-up

match for the tourists at Rugby Park next Sunday. Their team is:— Mark Wheeler (Old Boys); Daryl Park (Old Boys), Geoff Barry (Albion), Mark Mclntosh (Lincoln College); Simon Brown (Old Boys), Mark Liddicoat (University A); Neville Wilson (Hornby); John Te Amo (New Brighton); Kerry Flood (Marist), Rob Van Lent (Old Boys), Stuart Mitchell (Shirley), Adrian Muir (University A); Terry Petersen (Marist), Colin Stokes (Burnside), Rue Koha (Linwood).

Reserves.— Graeme Ellis (New Brighton), Mike O’Donovan (Marist), Brian Hunter (Belfast), Steven Schultz (Sydenham), Mike Fransen (Linwood), Kevin Milne (Marist). Any players not available ring Fergus Campbell (work 63-750) or Tom George (home 886-948). Advt
