NZPA Southport The wealthy Brisbane owner, John Needham, sold his racing empire for more than $894,000 at a dispersal sale at Southport on Tuesday. Mr Needham, one of Australia’s biggest private racehorse owners, sold out because what he had intended to be a hobby had “grown out of all proportion.” The primising stayer, Durham Lodge, topped the sale at $BB,OOO, going to the former resort owner and retail business magnate, Jim Kennedy.. Mr Kennedy was determined to secure Durham Lodge from strong competition, including Ernie Smith, who flew up from Sydney, and other wealthy businessmen. After the purchase Mr Kennedy admitted he was prepared to go to at least $lOO,OOO to secure Durham Lodge, which has won four races and is .considered a top prospect for the Doomben Cup.
