New cancer ward

PA Wellington Wellington Hospital’s struggling cancer department has been given $0.5 million by the Government to employ more staff and to open a new ward. . An immediate sum of $44,000 will start off the improvements to Wellington Hospital’s cancer treatment and the rest will be made available this financial year. A storm blew up last year over cancer treatment at the hospital when the head of the

department, Dr Alan Gray, said he was “fed up” with trying to make ends meet. He said that his department did not have enough staff or facilities to maintain a proper service for patients and that Wellington’s treatment was: lagging behind other centres. Announcing the grant, the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) said the money would provide an additional 18 beds for cancer treatment at the hospital.
