Beirut fighting erupts at dawn
NZPA Beirut Fighting broke out again early yesterday in Beirut and the central Lebanese city of Zahle after six hours of relative calm on Saturday night. In Beirut shooting began at dawn, mainly in the southeast Sector of the city, between regular troops of the Lebanese Army and members of the Syrian-dominated Arab Deterrent Force. The Christian Rightist Voice of Lebanon radio said several fires had broken out as a result of shelling. The Defence Ministry said that five Lebanese troops
were wounded on Saturday when their positions were fired upon in the south-east-ern and eastern district "of Beirut. The Voice of Lebanon said that shelling had restarted at 3.30 pm. (NZ time) but the official Lebanese Radio maintained that things were still calm and units of the Lebanese Army were preparing to enter Zahle as soon as they were ordered to do so. More than 100 people have died in the fighting, which erupted last week and is described -as among the worst since the 1975-76 civil •war.
