Sport for naval visitors
Sports fixtures have been arranged for members, of the 203 crew of H.M.A.S. Jervis Bay which will arrive at Lyttelton tomorrow. Included - in the sports events are two rugby matches, and volleyball and softball matches, against Lincoln College and Army sides. The Jervis Bay is - a; training ship with: .45 . junior officers under training. She has ' J just completed a •train-r--ing cruise in New Zealand
waters and will be open to inspection only by groups from Christchurch organisations during the three-day visit. Before being acquired by the Royal Navy in 1977, the Jervis Bay was. a roll-on roll-off passenger, ferry running between the’ Australian mainland and Tasmania. Her role mow is-i |o .train/ junior officers' in basic' navigation and seamanship.- ' The only New Zealander
embarked is Ensign. J. E. Campbell, who is in his final stages of training with the. Royal Australian Navy. He distinguished himself last year when he was appointed Chief Midshipman at the Royal Australian Naval College. His parents live in Christchurch, ‘ his father. Lieutenant Commander Fergus Campbell, being well known in Naval circles. Ensign Campbell will soon be posted to H.M.N.Z.S. Taranaki.
The Jervis Bay’s commanding officer, Commander ; Michael Keay, joined the; Royal Australian Navy in; 1949. He has gained a lot of; experience both on shore; and at sea atjd was promoted to the rank of commander in 1972. He took command of the Jervis Bay la't year. The first ship to bear the, name, Jervjs Bay, was passenger-cargo vessel -built* in 1922 and sunk in the At-; lantic in 1940.
