Gisborne forges ahead

Gisborne City increased its lead to four points with its win over Hamilton in yesterday’s round of Rothmans Soccer League matches. A scrambled goal 14 minutes from the end gave Gisborne its fifth win. Its closest challenger before the round began, Hanimex-North Shore, crashed to a heavy defeat in Dunedin. The middle of the table is particularly congested, one point covering six teams. A goal two minutes from the end saved Mount Wellington from what would have been a remarkable three consecutive defeats. Manurewa and Christchurch Mogal United drew, 1-1, Sam Malcolmsen giving the Auckland side a seventeenth minute lead with a strong shot from a sharp angle. Peter Bennie equalised midway through the second half with a-shot from outside the penalty area which took a slight deflection.

Malcolmsen, Greg Hough, and David Bright all had good chances for Manurewa and it was not until the second half that United began to assert itself. David Jackson and Barry Pickering. the latter celebrating his inclusion in the New Zealand

squad, were the pick of the United side. Woolston W.M.C. was beaten by Takapuna City, with Keith Francis scoring Woolston’s only in the second half. Results: Manurewa 1 (Sam Malcolmsen), Christchurch Mogal United 1 (Peter Bennie). Half-time: 1-0. Takapuna City 2 (Alister Elder. Barrv Wevmouth), Woolston W.M.C. 1. (Keith Francis). Half-time: 2-0.
