14 teams left in pre-Easter bowls

There is no possibility of another all-Linwood final to. the Christchurch pre-Easter fours bowls tournament next week-end, but the chances are still bright of the club adding to its great run of success in the last few years.

One Linwood team, that skipped by Ken Watson and containing Christchurch’s most successful bowler this season. Sonny Calder, is through to the last eight. However, it might face a stiff challenge in the quarterfinals when it meets a strong Papanui side skipped by Brian McGowan. McGowan’s team of Duncan White, Dave Trainor, and Keith Browning ’is a centre representative four of earlier in the season. These two teams are a round ahead of the field, and on the same half of the draw as them is another Linwood team, which although playing under Wally Wilkinson’s name is, as from the last of the section rounds on Saturday, being skipped by Warren Fitchett. John Saundercock and Curly Lyons are the other two members.

Wilkinson only just survived in a titanic struggle with Leon Jones (Leeston) in the second post-section round yesterday, and he could have another hard battle on his hands when he meets Bill McDonald (Spreydon) next Saturday morning. Graham Stanley, who is skipping a South Brighton team of Peter Meier. Bernie MacManus, and Tom Dixon, appeals as the strongest challenger among the eight teams remaining in the other half of the draw. Stanley’s team, Dixon especially,

played very well to have a convincing win over Robin Howman (Fendalton) in the final round yesterday. However, Arnold Memory (Woolston W.M.C.) and Travis Coup (Kaiapoi) are proven skips still in contention and Neville Poole (Sumner) cannot be discounted either. There was some very good bowls from Poole’s team yesterday. The 14 skips to continue next Saturday are Memory, Ray Ward (Shirley), Keith Becker (Riccarton W.M.C.), Stanley, Poole, Bill Hall (Halswell). Alan Roberts (Cashmere), Coup, Wilkinson, McDonald, Ken Shivas (Burnside). Jim Gowens (Riccarton Racecourse), McGowan, and Watson. The tournament resumed on Saturday with the last three of the section rounds and the reduction, because of rain the previous Saturday, of the section rounds from nine to six meant a longer than expected list of qualifiers. The total was, in fact, 72. This longer list also means that the final will not be reached until next Sunday morning. The venue will, as on Saturday, still be Edgeware, and it will be something different in centre finals in that it will be played in conjunction with a tournament that Edgeware has set down for all day Sunday. Yesterday’s post-section results were:-
