Champion does well in badminton

Canterbury's outstanding A grade badminton club, Railway 1, began its defence of the interclub title with a "whitewash” of Christchurch at the V. R. Skel'erup Bad'.riinton Hall on Saturday. In each case, the wins were in straight games.

Both Mairehau and Hagley I had similarly crushing wins. Mairehau did drop one match to Hagley 11. but that was by way of Petcr Whiting safeguarding his fitness. He and Joanne Tucker having already won the first game of their mixed doubles against Mark Chambers and Bev Leopold, Whiting suffered a bruised foot. He finished that game, and defaulted the next, the team’s victory already in the tag, thus avoiding the risk of aggravating the injury. The handy depth of the Hagley club was well illustrated in its unblemished win against University. In the absence of David Ross. Greg Paskell filled in well, winning all three of his matches, indeed, the only flaw in the Hagley I performance was that the mixed doubles went to three games, Paskell and Brian Williams dropping the first, 16-18, and only winning the decider by the same margin.

The other three 'matches were much more keenly contested, with the sharp rivalry between the Bryndwr teams a feature. This turned out to be a battle of the top side’s male players ultimately accounting for the young female strength in the- second side.

Debbie Sherlock, a promising prospect, accounted for Wendy Thorpe — the latter gallantly scoring injury and illness — in both singles and doubles and Brvndwr I, its male clean-sweep i being countered by the same result to tlie Bryndwr II women, had to take both mixed doubles to win and that was hard fought. One sidelight was that brothers came into conflict on three occasions, and each, time, Mark Reid had the measure of David Reid. I However, the experience of John De Heron was the most critical point in Bryndwr Fs success. The depth of Railway’s re-

sources was underlined by the victory enjoyed by the second side, at the expense of Canterbury, even in spite of the three wins enjoyed by the siiy Audrey Smith. Graham Sercombe’s y cuth and vigour brought him a clean sweep in his matchings against Don Le Page. Warren Edgecumbe’s recent illness may have played a vital part in Knox's 3-5 loss to South Brighton, though the veteran’s steadiness brought Knox a vital victory in the mixed doubles. The equally-experienced Paul Boatwood also had to fight to hold out Eion Kirkland, but the most impressive performing was by a junior, Adrienne Williamson, against Janet Miles.
