Team of 50 likely for World Cup athletics

A team of up to 50' athletes will be named within the next few weeks to represent the Oceania region in the World Cup track and field meeting in Rome, according to the convener of the selection panel, Mr Barry Hunt, of Invercargill. ’ New Zealand could expect about 12 athletes to be included. The remainder would almost certainly be Australians, Mr Hunt said. “This is about our usual quota,” he said. No announcement date has been set. although the team had to be completed before April 12, the last day for entries. ■ • ;%

The World Cup contest is scheduled for the first weekend of September in Rome. The selectors, Messrs Hunt,

Phil May (Australia) and Arthur' Eustace (Pacific Islands), plan to send the maximum of one athlete for every event and are also intending to send full relay squads. In addition, four travelling ? reserves will be named. ’ ’•= • ■ The strength of the- New Zealand, section of the team will depend a great deal on the availability of the former Olympic 1500 m champion, John Walker, and the distance specialist, Rod Dixon. Both had been asked if they would run, but neither has given the selectors a definite, answer. Terry Lomax, who became the first New Zealander to clear 7ft in the Pacific Con-ference-Games in January, is one, Canterbury,, athlete who

seems certain, of selection, in spite of his surprising defeat in the New Zealand championships at Hastings. There would be no'special trials before the.selection of the New Zealand ...team for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane next year,' said Mr Hunt, who is also convener of the New Zealand track and Afield selection panel.-The final trials, in effect, will be the next New Zealand championships, scheduled for next March at Queen Elizabeth 11. Park, in Christchurch. “It would not. be fair or reasonable to hold trials in August,” he said. “However, the whole season will be taken into account, not just the New Zealand championships.?, .
