SCHOOLS’ VOLLEYBALL
There is certain to be keen competition in the South Island secondary schools’ volleyball championships at Pioneer Stadium this week-end. The incentive for about 350 competitors from the 40 teams taking part is a place in the national championships, which will be held in Dunedin at the end of April. The first three place-getters in each section will qualify.
The tournament is divided into four sections; senior boys and girls, which is open to fifth form students and above, and junior boys and girls, for third and ’ fourth formers.
King’s High School of Dunedin has dominated the senior boys’ section for several years, although it can expect some stiff competition from Hillmorton High
School, the top Christchurch qualifier for the event, Shirley Boys’ High School and Cashmere High School. Hillmorton and Kaiapoi High School should be King’s toughest opponents in the junior boys’ class.
Avonside and Christchurch Girls’ High School have long been determined rivals in the senior girls’ section, and both have good records at previous South Island tournaments. Their main Dunedin opposition should come from Bayfield High School and Otago Girls’ High School. Hillmorton and Otago Girls’ High will be the pick of a. fairly even junior girls’ contest. One encouraging feature of this section is that the Greymouth High School team has qualified for the first time.
