OH, I LAND IN THE SUN
Hectares of countryside, planted in frees, are the site not far from Christchurch of the private club ‘'Pineglades.” Reassuringly commonplace, with its caravans and campers and. cottages, with its roads and fire hydrants and little red telephone box. it could be any small holiday resort. Children play, daddies mow, mummies call Will yoii come here at ONCE for your DINNER? The swimming pool has people lounging around like an aperitif advertisement, the flying fox (from a two-storey children’s castle built, up in a tree) attracts, as do the trampolines, the super-energetic, and for the not-so-ener-getic there is tennis, volleyball, miniature golf, and armchairs. In the clubhouse, and round the barbecue pit, adults may sit in the shade
and take refreshment: and a wellstocked wee store sells ice blocks for the. kids. If you like that sort of thing land the majority of people do) it. is about as close as you can get to "Close to Home. '' Except for one minor summer-season difference: "Pineglades” is the grounds of . the Canterbury Sun Club, a sort of middle-class Nambassa where people do not wear thick woolly underwear and fur hats unless it is actually cold. Nudity is not. of course, compulsory ('although certain Christchurch critics refuse after-noon-tea invitations as if it. were) but “Pineglades” is the place where all-over sun-tans, even for the pakeha. are possible without coming out of a bottle.
Speaking of the store, it was advertising for an assistant the other day. "Good conditions. Hours to suit.” and. “Uniform supplied.”
