Special correspondent Hastings

Nioami, Mutual and San Juan were the most impressive winners at yesterdays Hastings barrier trials. The trials, consisting ot eight heats, had added interest with nine horses from the Woodville stable ot Bruce Marsh entered. The Avondale Cup winner, Shamrock, contested the 1200 m heat for class I. 2 horses. He only finished eighth out of 12 runners but was not asked for a serious effort- , c „„ This heat was won by San Juan in the hands of the Hastings apprentice, Joan Bonham. He trailed the pacemakers, Charlie and The Fox until the home turn and then kicked clear over the final stages to win by a length and three quarters. His time of Imin 15s was not fast but the trial was held well out from the fence. Second home was Wellshar, which enhanced his chances for tomorrow’s Manawatu meeting. He just nosed out Clive Comet with The Fox, Anticipate and Grubby Magee next.
