and banded during our research have been later killed! by cats,” said the director of the Wildlife Service, Mr Ralph Adams, yesterday. He said the cats threatened the bird with extinction
“A remote and wild corner lof Stewart Island remains the last stronghold of a small, viable population. It cannot remain viable for long if continually faced with a high mortality rate inflicted by cats,” Mr Adams said.
Tl.e service would try poisoned fish to kill the cats. The poison would be rapidacting and painless. He assured pet-lovers that the big, hungry, wild cats were much different from the domestic breed.
