Jobless march

NZPA . London The English Trades Union Congress has announced plans for a “Jarrow-style” march from Liverpool to London in protest against rising unemployment. The 450 km trip is being viewed as the most important event on unemployment since the 19305. There will be a total of 500 “hard-core” marchers who will make the complete journey, beginning in Liverpool on May 1 and ending in London on May 28.

Among those who hav y e already declared their support are celebrities Spike Milligan. Alfie Bass, and Dame Peggy Ashcroft, as well as trade unionists and members of Parliament including a Liberal, Cyril Smith.

Each long-term marcher will be sponsored for $244 but an appeal has been launched to raise up to $244,000 which, it is thought, the march will cost.
