14,000 Kiwis settle in Aust.
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney More than 27,000 New Zealanders settled in Australia permanently or long term in the last year. The Federal Minister of Immigration (Mr lan Macphee), answering a Parliamentary question, said that in the last year 14,274 New Zealanders settled in Australia permanently while 12,915 came to visit intending to stay for 12 months or more.
It was the first time the number of permanent settlers had outnumbered the long-term visitors. In 1974-75, the number of settlers was 2771 compaied with 6482 long-term visitors, and 1978-79,
11,668 New Zealanders settled in Australia and 16,450 arrived as visitors. The number heading the other way across the Tasman were far less. Mr Macphee’s answer to a question by the Opposition spokesman on Immigration, Mr Michael Young, revealed that in the last June year 6225 Australians settled permanently in New Zealand and another 2174 went as visitors for 12 months or longer.
Hudreds of thousands of New Zealanders also visited Australia on short-term business or holiday trips—--296,291 in the year to June, 1980, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. <
