Gin traps to stay

PA Wellington The Government has turned down a petition from the New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society asking for a ban on the use of gin traps. The society’s secretary. Mrs 'Bette Overell, said yesterday that she was told the use of gin traps would be permitted until a suitable alternative was found. The Minister of Forests (Mr Young) told her that under present law local authorities could ban gin traps if they wished. The Forest Research Institute and the Technical Advisory Committee (Animal Pests), in consultation with the S.P.C.A. would continue testing alternative traps as they became available.
