Obituary Mr J. S. Satterthwaite

A prominent Timaru com-: munity worker and nationally known stock and share broker, Mr Jack Seddon Satterthwaite, has died in Timaru. He was 73.

Mr Satterthwaite opened his sharebroking business in 1937 as a consequence of a boyhood hobby. For almost 45 years, more particularly in the last 30, he specialised in the underwriting of loan moneys raised by local authorities. His firm’s interests were spread far and wide and it was recognised as one of the biggest in the field of local body underwriting. He was involved in many major loan proposals throughout the country, including the New Zealand oil refinery at Whangarei, the Southland Harbour Board's berthage develop-, ment for the Bluff aluminium smelter, the Otago Harbour Board's container crane project and a host of big

building jobs in South Canterbury and . further afield.

At the time of setting up his business, Mr Satterthwaite became a country member of the Christchurch Stock Exchange and held that status for 41 years to be possibly the longest-serving country member of any stock exchange. With the amalgamation of the Christchurch and Invercargill exchanges in April, 1978, the way was clear for him to become a full member of the organisation.

Mr Satterthwaite, a son of a former mayor of Timaru, served on the Timaru City Council for 18 years between 1938 and 1965. His special interest lay in the field of electricity ’ and he was an executive member of both the New Zealand Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association and the New Zealand Rural Electrical Reticulation Council for 12 years.

Mr Satterthwaite devoted his time to a number of Timaru qrganisations, and over the years was president of the South Canterbury Chamber, of Commerce, the South Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association and Lawn Tennis Association, chairman of the Timaru Horticulture Society, and . a committee member of the South Canterbury Jockey Club. He was the oldest active Rotary member in the province.

He was a highly successful gladioli and chrysanthemum exhibitor and his many awards included the gladioli championship ribbon and plaque which'he won at the Christchurch Centennial Show. He was a national ranked chrysanthemum judge and a fellow of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Mr Satterthwaite is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter,.
