Flood of census queries
Census officers were kept busy yesterday answering hundreds of queries about filling in the 1981 census forms. The area officer for . the Statistics . Department, Mr B. M. Thorne, said-that the officers ..had. answered queries until 9 p.m. The department .had been inundated with : telephone calls. Post Office enumerators throughout - Canterbury had also been kept busy for most of yesterday with inquiries. Most of; the calls received by the department had come from . elderly people unsure about answering the questions on education and ’ Social Security benefits. If people did not have the census form .-ready when census officers called it could be posted.
