Duty on clothing
PA Auckland A planned 25 per cent duty on New Zealand clothing sold ! in Australia could cost this country millions of dollars, :the president of the New .Zealand Association of Fashion Manufacturers, Mr Derek Batts, believes. As clothing industry ,repre ; sentatives attended the eighth New Zealand Fashion Fair in Auckland, Mr Batts, called for more communication between manufacturers in the two countries. ; New Zealand exported more than $2O million worth of clothing to Australia annually and this accounted for
about 85 per cent of the nation’s overseas earnings from fashion, he said. Duties on clothing exports sold across the Tasman ranged from nil to about 12 per cent. New rates to be imposed by Australia on its clothing imports next January may raise the duty on New Zealand fashions by 25 per cent. This would threaten the bulk of New Zealand's market in Australia by making our exports less competitive, said Mr Batts. Industry-to-industry discussions were vital to overcome the problem, he said.
